March 2000

03.31.2000

I did some tweakiness things in Misc...

metajohn doubt's Apache serving pages from a Palm... Well, there is a "web server for your Pilot", and there are web servers you can run on a Newton... so maybe it's just a matter of time :P

Even Yahoo is doing it...

What day is it?

Today's birthdays: [an error occured reading today's birthday file... sorry!]

Yesterday I mentioned writing Analog config files, and how much fun it was ;) Well, there are currently 2 companies who will do it for you... if you don't want to d.i.y...

Hey, Utsler, you're back on the list... It would help if Netscape Communicator could properly render the page...

Friday's are usually slow (whew!) but you can always look forward to email from Apache Week. This week we learn about the ApachePDA project. Care to see Apache serving pages from a Palm? (screen shots) And they're wanting to add SSL *and* PHP? Geez, throw MySQL in there too why dontca'! I wonder if That Redmond Company will get IIS running on a WinCE device anytime soon ;)

Gaak! I'm primarily a code guy, and I've always had a dislike for WYSI(N)WYG html editors (the 'N' is for NOT) but I've loaded Dreamweaver onto my Mac anyway... Does it really need well over 30 megs of RAM!? BBEdit's pretty happy with 5 or 6... I'll be evaluating Dreamweaver, but it's not replacing anything! (Don't wanna lose my 'old skule' status...;)

What's Lookout running anyway? I think they're on a DSL connection, but judging by how often I can hit their site, it seems like a 14.4 modem... ugh! How do they expect me to remember the early 1990's!?

03.30.2000

Today I worked on the A.L.P.S. (Automated Logfile Processing System) so I can see where people are coming from, and what they're looking at. Then I can sell that information... just kidding! ;)

Isn't writing config files for Analog fun?

I was disappointed to learn kamala.nu was not the site of Kamala of "Kamala and the Carnivores" fame... (there *would* have been a link to Lookout Records here, but I can't hit their site...)

Speaking of Shimme, and features... I know have the ability to post really old photos! This feature was made possible by me finding my really old CD of really old files... cool...

I took the day off yesterday, I needed to do more thinking and less writing... I've been working on a project. Should be ready soon, real soon...

Feature wars in full effect! Probably more than half the sites that now have the ability to link to each individual entry don't need to link to each individual entry or probably shoudn't link to each individual entry. As usual, just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should. When all ya gots is a hammer, everything looks like a nail...

I had this note that said "code rush" and I forgot what it was for, until I saw on CamWorld that code rush the PBS documentary is on tonight. I consulted my local listings, and can't find the damn thing listed anywhere! Would anyone like to tape it for me?

I noticed The Cable Guy is on tonight. Yes, I'm one of the 10 people who thought this movie ruled. (Except for the last 60 seconds of the film...) Jim Carey looks like Shimme in this movie. If you know Shimme, you're probably laughing your ass off right now... If you are Shimme... sorry dude! (I mean sorry that you're Shimme, not sorry for my comment...)

03.28.2000

I like this aaronland guy. Good stuff, good stuff... He's even got a category titled "warpigs" (!)

emo emo emo... good gosh, I thought perhaps this was a joke, I mean I *really* wanted it to be a joke, but I get the feeling it's *not* a joke... (please tell me it's a joke!) Ok, I read this page which pretty much says that this page *is* a joke, whew... I still think the whole thing might be a joke though...

I used to think I knew what emo was about, but that all changed when my first child was born, at that moment, I felt as if any emotion I'd felt previously was just a precursor to the biggest event in life, the beginning of my child's life, and the love I felt for her and her mother. That my friends, is the pure definition of emo...

Now this is funny and with a mention of 'crusties' and 'Profane Existence...' whew! The memories!

Good gosh! Visit the Profane Existence E-Commerce Site... I swear, I never in a million years, would expect to see something like this, but then again, "it seems like a million years, but I guess it's been only 10..." Ok, it's really "Blackened Distribution" the real Profane Existence site is over here...

Actually, I found this page quite touching... "While we harbor some (perhaps foolish) ideas of putting the revolution first, in reality it is our families, friends and loved ones whom we would rather give the bulk of our attention to..." Who would have thought those state-smashing crusties had such big emo-hearts...

I can't remember where I dug this up, but it's an interesting read about some phenomenon called weblogs?

I'm all for teaching programming to everyone, but if they teach programming in skule shouldn't they teach Perl? I know what you're thinking "Hey, Perl looks like modem line noise/is crap/sucks/is difficult/is too loosely structured/was written by a mental case/etc..." Well, hey, then you should want Perl to be taught! Kids hate skule anyways, let's give 'em something to *really* hate! Don't choose some namby-pamby easy-to-learn language! Geez...

(I just wanted to use the phrase "namby-pamby")

03.27.2000

I also updated my linkwatcher page, and added a Sherlock Plug-In...

I added a mail form for those times when you're too damn lazy to launch your email app...

Ack! Ack! Ack! I seem to be following links from people that I'm just positively sure have to be jokes... but I get this sinking feeling that they're not... I'll have to collect them all up, scary stuff...

Ahh... ahh... Haiku!

It should be noted that I don't exactly update this site 'manually' - I do use stuff I've written, and still use Frontier (v5.0.1 the last free version) for some of it. I just don't use the new tools like Blogger, Pitas, or EditThisPage, though I have tried them. I'd prefer to write my own CMS, my account's a bit limiting right now (the account this site lives at, and my bank account) so for now, I do most of this client side using various tools and scripts I've written, and some of it server side, using ssi, perl, and cron.

[D.I.Y. write yer own damn code...] I really don't have anything against these tools, they're pretty neat. I mentioned making a 'Not Powered by Blogger' button, but didn't follow through, I did make this button, however... and someone else did this one... ;]

Alas, Tick, we knew ye well... I eagerly await the big screen version of The Tick, if it ever gets made...

My head just hurts... it hurts... pressure, congestion, general pain... gimme a shot... gimme the cure...

I think jack.nu should be moved to jack.emo, or maybe jack-e.mo... or something that sounds like 'emo' (of course, we'd need those TLDs...)

Worlds colliding is always somewhere in the background.... let's keep it there...

03.24.2000

Today for lunch I just wrote Epinions... SpongeBob SquarePants, Dexter's Laboratory, Keyspan USB Twin Serial Adapter...

They didn't have listings for most of my favorite shows yet...

There's an interesting usability study on Epinions, kind of an Opinion on Epinions, as it were... (A meta-pinion?) [from Scripting News]

If anyone has any MS Exchange horror stories, or has links to any, please send them my way...

Lake Effect mentions some Exchange problems...

In case you can't guess, today I'm really hating Microsoft... Seems you can configure your Exchange mail server to force all attachments to use ms/tnef for the encoding method, but just try to find a decoder... Damn that Microsoft!

"Wreck society through direct action by destroying its institutions and the men who serve it..."

03.23.2000

What's the first thing you do when you do something really absent minded and stupid? Do you look around, to see who saw you? I remember when we would ride the U-Bus to UWM, and one day in the winter, we saw this guy on the sidewalk, who probably thought he was really cool, (business major probably) and he slips on the ice and totally wrecks, we just laughed and laughed... ha ha ha! There's a word for that, gaining pleasure from other's misforture... I just can't remember it - it's pronounced 'shadenfrued' or something...

Anyway, while reading a printout from the O'Reilly web site about security, I walked into a chair... oops...

I added an 'imagery' box down and to the left. New images should cycle in... Here's the deal, I upload whatever images I want making sure the name has some date on it (like 20000324) and the server then moves one into place on the specified date... Now I just need to make a ton of images...

Now that I look at it, the imagery box may add way too much color to the page. All those colors! Geez... I'll have to put some grayscale or quadtone images in there now and then. Load time should be fine, even with the 100,000 images and 1000 lines of JavaScript I usually put on this page ;) (yes, I'm kidding!)

The Milwaukee Perl Monger's Group? Nothing there yet... I still waiting to hear from the maintainer of the site...

The current sweepstakes at undergroundfilm.com has a Pixelator for a prize... I've already got a Pixelator ;) (thanks Drew...)

PixelVision: get the pig in RealVideo...

Some companies have good methodology. Some have what I call 'Stupidology'

I redid my error pages, 401, 404 and 500...

Lazy lazy lazy lazy lazy lazy lazy lazy lazy lazy lazy lazy lazy lazy lazy lazy summer! Is 'Lazy Summer' coming? I'm not sure... I hope so. I doubt it. For now you can hear Lazy Summer in RealAudio...

I think I might need to create a 'Not Powered by Blogger' button for the dozen of us left who don't use Blogger.

I'm going to be starting work on a PHP based site soon, which is good, as I've been meaning to do more with PHP for some time now... PHP sites I like: metajohn, More Like This.

This would go on any job description I'd write - " If you rely upon MS FrontPage for anything, do not bother contacting me." [from SwallowingTacks]

I also found mention of Neurosis on SwallowingTacks... (I mentioned Neurosis on 08.14.1999, btw...)

03.21.2000

I like Coca-Coma, I like the color scheme, I like the design, I like the style... I like it. (Is it just my browser, or are all the links crossed out?)

Brak lost... crap...

I've been trying to figure out how to integrate photos into this site a bit more without messing up the design... hmmm, any ideas? Anyone?

Maybe I should just move to Madison instead...

Crap I'm tired... I spent almost 11 hrs at werk... too much, too much crap crap crap!

Today I'm hating Sybase, curse you Sybase!

I ordered a Google shirt. It should fit nicely with my white T-shirt obsession...

Eatonweb's Blog Portal was mentioned in the print version of MacWorld... There's a little blurb on some weird new kind of site called 'weblogs' or something...

Bump now has a Log Box, Picture Box, Site Box, and Link Box... Might I also suggest a Cardboard Box, Cereal Box, Beat Box, and BeBox ;) - Oh! and of course a 'Meta Box'...

Ooooohhh, that damn ms/tnef! I'm still looking for a good way to deal with those annoying MS barnacles... Once again, I plead with people to send PLAIN TEXT whenever possible... communication! communication!

03.20.2000

I'm working on two new things, one using linkwatcher's XML feed, and another using my own sloppy perl code...

Shana wanted a plug here... Hey, Shana, provide me some good photos of my kids and I'll give ya more plugs than the power strip under my desk... (Shana's a photographer...)

A Photo of Shana's dog...

03.19.2000

I really meant to write some code tonight, but seeing as it's 2:52 AM, it ain't gonna happen... so go read MetaFilter instead...

Kids are the greatest... and that's all there is to say about that.

03.17.2000

If you're reading this on 03.17.2000 there should be a green St. Patrick's Day banner treatment above. I'm as trendy as Google...

I like the Google shirt... but is this a joke? And a Google umbrella?

Patrick is SpongeBob's best friend, and he's a starfish. SpongeBob's rules... That is all...

THE SHAMAN: Driving to werk, I used to see this little red car, somewhat old and beat up, the license plate said SHAMAN. For a while I didn't see the little red car, then a saw a little black car with the SHAMAN plates and said to myself, "Hey, SHAMAN got a new car..." so today I saw SHAMAN again, this time he had a white Apple sticker on the back of his car... Hi SHAMAN...

Ok folks, time to TAKE DOWN THE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS! There's these two houses I drive by everyday that must be having a contest: who can keep their holiday lights up the longest. It's March 17th. It's St. Patrick's Day. And it's not just that they still have them up, they still TURN THEM ON every night! I've seen 3 other houses that do this in my recent drives around the area... what's the deal?

I've been doing way too much driving lately...

I know it's time to sync up my Palm when I can't actually remember when I last sync'd up my Palm...

I had a story about pickles... pickles are green... I'll tell that story later...

03.16.2000

It's been a long freakin' day...

I've been so freakin' swamped with large, large, large projects lately... it's starting to scare me. Anyone who says building an intranet for a large corporation is easy will get a mighty kick in the head from my Chuck Taylors... I'm starting to think this article about Bay Network's Intranet give a *conservative* estimate on time and cost...

Sorry for using freakin' so much...

And don't get me started on how thin-clients can really make things worse...

Oh, the date to the left is now a link to the permanent url for the entry... so if you wanna link to something (I know, it's not very likely) you can use the link at the left for permanence... retroactivity to follow...

Now seems like a good time to review The Top Ten New Mistakes of Web Design...

On top of everything, I'm still trying to do some tweaks to this site... which I really don't have time for... really, I don't...

jack's got the torn-up converse all-stars and could care less about beer, he's like a younger me... he's also an ex-plister - jack, you'll do fine, I'm not sure when, I hope sooner than later... but I've got confidence in ya boy! (He's also got a bunch of domain names...)

Sure, Nate is great, but on second thought, maybe today should be Drew Day, ok, that'll be tomorrow... as I wouldn't survive without Drew right now... all hail Drew...

I hereby declare today Nate Mendel Day here at Rasterboy Enterprises.

The garbagemen are at it again... I really need a video camera so I can capture them destroying my property on tape...

For those who love paper... Vicki Schober Company

"Everyone is passing you"
"That's ok, in some alternate universe somewhere, I'm passing everyone else!

I miss Natural Cause, I miss 8 bark, I miss Madison...

If I lived in the Chicago area, I'd be breaking my copier all the time...

Someone stole my wheel cover... damn thieves...

Forbidden Planet, Forbidden Fruit, Forbidden Web Site? Everything's forbidden nowadays...

"Why do we tell jokes inside?"
"Because it's too cold outside!"

03.15.2000

Today whilst driving with little Emma, she said "I don't see any good trash..." - I'm pretty proud of my dumpster diving daughter, not even 4 years old and she's already on the lookout for good junk on the side of the road... she learned from the master!

Yesterday I spent some time browsing on an old DEC VAX terminal by telnetting into a Linux machine and using Lynx. Why you ask? Well, it was all I had available where I was. I hit a number of sites, and most were pretty usable. Apathy, btw, looks pretty much *exactly* the same as it does with a gui browser ;)

Yesterday I heard the phone in the office next to me ringing, and the phone 2 offices down ringing... at the same time, as if they were talking to each other... kinda creeped me out...

tHe MaChInEs ArE tAkInG oVeR!!!

I hear ya...

I can feel a storm a comin'

03.14.2000

Mwuhahaha... I like Metababy...

If I was a big Blogger fan I'd say "Blogger is Bligger and Bletter than ever before!" or maybe "Got the Blues? Go from a Bland web site to a 'Blow them away' web site in the Blink of an eye, with Blogger!" Hmmm, I guess there's a reason I don't write ad copy...

Some family pictures... (Photography by Pete and the QuickCam - Directed by Emma)

Yesterday I set up a procmail filter to capture email, run it through some perl madness, and write it to a file, so it gets included in a web page... I'm still not sure exactly *what* I'm gonna do with that one...

03.13.2000

The MXMW festival got a little out of hand yesterday, if the lost and found we've got a size 12 Chuck Taylor, a wireless mouse, a "Weblogging for Dummies" book, and 12 AOL CD's...

Whew, I spent some time pasting the number "19" where it belongs... so hopefully y2k bugfixes are now complete...

I've been working on larger and larger projects lately. Which is nice, because it feels good to do something huge, but it also stinks sometimes because large projects have so many little details to keep track of, and seem to take forever to complete. Sometimes by the time I finish something big, I'm so sick of it, I never want to see it again...

It's funny, when I mentioned MoreLikeThis, I didn't even realize that I had previously built something similar in Perl... Definitely not as advanced, but at the basic concept level, pretty similar. (It's for people at work to share links relevant to the projects we're working on...)

I've been reading up on procmail. I like procmail. I wanna do more with procmail...

The link I found for 7 Seconds is kinda old... but that makes it rather amusing. So there!

03.12.2000

Yee-Haw! Another wild day at the MXMW festival! Today we went to a rummage sale and bought some old junk that we plan to sell on ebay. That pretty much sums up our business plan of late...

I'm pretty sure yesterday was Mr. Gatewood's Birthday. Hope you had a fine day Mr. Gatewood...

I'm also pretty sure that 12 years ago The Potato Head Kids (PHK) played a show on the North Side (hey NSC!) with the Shredheads and the SpeedFreaks...

END OF TRANSMISSION.

03.10.2000

Whew! I finally made it to MXMW! I'm hoping Dan from Apathy will show up soon, then things will really get going! We've got a ton of open slots on the agenda, so if you want to do a seminar, round table, BOF, or whatever, just let us know...

The camera was stomped on by a cow that got loose, so we probably won't be uploading any photos from MXMW... sorry!

We're hoping Dan from Lake Effect will have a presentation on "Weblogging on Lake Michigan" (when's the last time *you* updated your site while aboard a boat!?)

What to do tonight? Well, if it snows some more we might go sledding! Otherwise we were thinking of just kickin' back and soakin' up those good 'ol midwestern values...

(no, you don't *have* to be named 'Dan' to attend MXMW...)

Someone I knew like 12 years ago came into our office for a job interview today... weird stuff... worlds collide!

I did manage to get more info for my w.a.t.n. page...

03.09.2000

jack was supposed to be organizing the SXSE (South by Straight-Edge) festival... but he didn't follow through... Nevertheless! Come join us at the MXMW fest! Are you going? Where are you staying? Who's gonna be there! The excitement is building...

Don't ya just love it when you have to deal with server admins who don't actually know *how* to administer a server? I've added mime types under Apache, it takes what? A few minutes? How long could it possibly take under IIS? Am I missing something?

Don't ya just hate when you have some great idea, but just never get the time to implement it? Then someone else comes along and does the same thing, and everyone thinks its the coolest thing since http? (If you do, well, get over it...)

Does AOL think your site is like this one?

I added a few more photos from werk...

I started fixing things up around here, adding the 'permanent link thang' (see the Archives page) but now at least there is a page for the current month (like this one) so if you wanted to link to today's entry *permanently* you'd go to this here place... The nice thing is the page is done with one line of code, I love SSI!

BBEdit thought that maybe I meant 'tang' not 'thang' - I would have thought it meant Tang, but it I guess it could be tang or is it some other tang?

I totally forgot about wozzle! (gotta get my head examined... again...)

It's fun to put on a cd and load wozzle and pretend it's going in sync with the music... (well, it is for me anyway...)

Touchdown! - Tornado Destroys South Side: Well, not the whole south side, but part of St. Francis, which is about a mile from where we used to live. Crazy...

I went to Madison again yesterday... I wish I could go for fun instead of going for meetings all the time... sigh...

I like yo-yo's. I like ho-ho's. I *don't* like no-no's. I don't like go-go's...

03.08.2000

We're working on a number of new projects here at Rasterboy Enterprises...

ShallowJump - I can't get into details, but it'll be here *really* soon. Real soon. Soon. Really...

Frogger - WebFrogs are the hot new thang. I can't get into any more details. We plan to really leap over the competition with this one though...

Fyra (pronounced 'Fire ya!') - is a method of firing people over the web! Is your new media career on the way out? What could be more fun that learning you've lost your job by reading a web page! (We're working with our friends over at Pyr0 on this one...)

Print.This.Page - this is a site that will allow you to print any web page! It's a total "win-win" Imagine if you could *print* this web page out at give it to a friend, it's all about sharing the flow...

Edit.That.Page - haven't you ever wanted to change the web site of some major corporation, but just didn't have the hacker/cracker/skriptkiddie skills needed to do so? Now you can Edit *any* web page! Just click the Edit.That.Page button anytime you see it! Moooooooz!

03.07.2000

Need some 'mini-weblog-banner-ads', or some email addresses? here ya go... (whoops!)

Hill Airy Us... and cool! and neat! and win-win! I laughed....

So Jawbreaker says "I am in pieces I have come unglued, you took a chunk of me with every bad mood, the wounds are deep, they may never heal..." and Sleep says "What is a soul, a mind, constructed by social binds..." I think they're both right...

Apathy's had some cool stuff lately, like the strange and funny search queries page, and other stuff, heck, just go there...

03.06.2000

A friend of mine has been running a Mac OS X box, this is what he said "It's cool, cuz it's unix.. and it sucks, cuz it's unix...." I will say it's kinda neat to telnet into a Mac and get some perl code running... and cron! oh, glorious cron!

They fixed Zend...

I forgot... Just like everyone else, I did the Guess the Dictator/Sit-com Character thing and it thought I was Homer Simpson... D'oh! I would assume it thought so based on the fact that I said I was a cartoon character (I was told this in college, and yes, it's true - I still am one) and that I like donuts...

Oops... I wanted to check out Zend but the site just had a page that said:

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class zend_storable in class.Zend_Storable.inc on line 3

metajohn gets lotsa points in my book for being one of the only other sites that puts the dates on the left side... LEFT DATES RULE!

We've been busy lately gearing up for the first MXMW festival, all of our worker bees are bizzy bizzy bizzy!

Today's search turned up the site of Screeching Weasel... augh! Are they *still* around!?

Oh, I added one new feature today, can you find it?

03.03.2000

Something I never thought I'd see: the sentence "New MP3s from the misfits." I really need to update my list of things I never thought I'd see... especially after that kid rock fiasco...

31337 HaX0r d00d cRaX AmAz0n! Yeah, one time we went out to eat and I asked for "soop" instead of "soup" - they never knew what hit em! Man, did I hack their ordering system with that one!!!

News Flash: The Media Still Sucks... (web page at eleven...)

kottke is one to talk about theft... that thing, where he has the text on the page, I was doing that *years* ago, and the thing with the clicking, when you click on something you go somewhere else, well, this site did that back in the mid 1990's... I won't even mention that once I used yellow for something... hurrmmm...

Yes sir, I can tell the difference between starcasm, scarcasm, and sarcasm, can you?

I installed Mozilla on my G2 yesterday, and it took well over 10 minutes, installing what appears to be thousands and thousands of files... sheesh... I do have high hopes for Mozilla, but I'm starting to think it's got too much in it. Do I need a digital wallet? Even the mail, composer, and other stuff if questionable, how about just a browser?

Whilst in Madison yesterday I wish I would have had time to track down Dan Fitch of Apathy...

Who am I kidding, I can't even find time to mail someone who lives in the same city I work in, the dandot guy...

In France it's known as zee RasterWeb, in Mexico it's el RasterWeb, and in Canada RasterWeb, eh? - but you can call it just plain old RasterWeb...

03.02.2000

I was in Madison today, drove past CameraWorld ;) and learned that Mountain Dew is #1 in Madison (according to a billboard anyway...)

03.01.2000

[via Bump] An MS-friendly president? hmmm, I bet an 'open-source' candidate would get lots of coverage (unless it's Al Gore;) and if it was an NRA person, they might even get ESR's support ;) (oops... thanks jim!)

I started working on Sherlock plug-ins for some of the weblog related sites... if other Mac users have interest in this let me know... (Does Windows have anything similar, even third-party stuff, like Sherlock and it's plug-in architecture?)

Yes, I will be entering the the 5k... and no, it has nothing to do with running... which I only do when someone is chasing me...

I got my NEXTSTEP 3.3 CD's yesterday, once I do an install on the NeXT Station I'll probably try to get Apache up and running... yes, I'm a geek...
