January 2000

01.31.2000

Ah, I remember all the guys in my old unit, there was Colonel Sanders, General Electric, Major Hazard, Sergeant Pepper, Corporal Punishment, and of course, Private Parts...

Geez, what's wrong with some people!? As a parent, I find this paddling stuff insane... (paddling is allowed in Dallas, btw)

I'm reminded of the Simpson's episode where the townsfolk take over the teaching duties, and Jasper runs down a list of things that constitute 'a paddlin' - of course I can separate an animated series from real life... (no, really!)

Oh, Futurama returns next week, says The Futurama Chronicles...

If load times for this page seem a little long, please let me know... thanks...

01.27.2000

The concept behind More Like This is cool! It really makes me want to redo this site, and build a real backend (hmmm, need money, need money!) Maybe this will be what I need to get into PHP more than I have been...

Now, I like Velveeta as much as anybody, but sometimes it's just too soft. Today I make one of those Chiken sandwiches (fake meat, for all you murderers out there) with some Velveeta, and warmed it up a bit. The first bite was like eating a glue sandwich... Well, I've never actually eaten a glue sandwich, but I can imaging what it would be like. I have eaten a powdered donut that rolled across a garage floor though...

Looking for good soy bars? (chocolate and peanut butter, mmmm!) try GeniSoy.

I remember Tom Jennings from waaaay back, the Shred of Dignity days, which I think was the early 90's... I did know he created FidoNet, but I didn't know he worked at Apple...

Hmmm, I should finish my story from yesterday... I'll work on that...

01.25.2000

Well, it's been an interesting two weeks... I got poked in the eye, got hospitalized with an infection, saw my daughter get hospitalized, and fell way behind at work. If I ever get a free minute, I'll actually type up the events as I can remember them...

Needless to say, my road to Linux toook a slight detour, so I'll update on that when there is something to update about...

01.18.2000

The road to Linux begins... I'm no Jon Katz, (but then again I won't write 20 articles about Columbine with the word 'Hellmouth' in them...) but I hope to write up some of my experiences getting a Linux box up and running. I've been using Linux for a few years now, but only as a web server where I telnet, or ftp into it - this is a whole new game... where I'll actually have a Linux box on my desk. I'm quite excited!

I also added a new feature... at the bottom of this page you'll see 'This page was created by...' - just testing some cgi/javascript stuff.. more on that later...

I dislike Ballmer. Sure I disliked Gates (still do!) but I mean I *REALLY* dislike Ballmer...

01.14.2000

Oooh, the 19th is coming soon! Besides the news from Transmeta, version 1.3.10 of Apache is scheduled for release...

"Gates said... he will spend his time doing what he likes best -- writing code." ha ha ha ha ha ha!

From Scripting News comes this excellent link of olde very interesting stuff... The photos are a hoot!

I miss Madison... Here's a cool web-based app for finding photos though...

Steam tunnel systems are cool...

Only on Slashdot could you get nearly 20,000 votes on a "waffle" poll...

...The natural response to this, enveloping the entire body in foam, is not recommended because if inhaled it would kill the individual by suffocation...

I thought I'd finally be able to use my old Mac IIvx as a NetBSD box, since we've got two PowerMacs now, but basically Mom or Dad gets a PowerMac, child #1 gets a PowerMac, and child #2 gets the old 68k Mac IIvx... sigh... I think I need an Intel machine w/Linux on it next...

The tank has livened up a bit, we've now got 3 Fancy Guppies, 2 Zebra's (I had to 'remove' one for his negative attitude) 2 orange fish that I can't remember the name of, and 2 Neons... but they're all boring anyway! The Fiddle Crab is the real star of the show! The first day we had him he crawled into the filter twice, then we finally rearranged things to prevent that... he's a cool little freak though, fascinating to watch...

01.03.2000

I just had to get this photo up... not even a year old, and already she's complaining about bandwidth ;)

Screenshots of bad y2k-erroneously-date web pages...

19100? 100? 192000? The first two I can see, but how did Microsoft get 192000?

Remember to add (+) not concatenate (.) those dates!

y2k problems: My ISP sent me a blank log report for the week, and the stats they generate also failed. I had to rewrite some scripts I had because my web hosting company finally decided that it was time to use 4 digits (I would have liked to had advance notice of that) and I experienced *extremely* poor phone service yesterday (when's the last time you connected at 12.4 k?)

This site's y2k fixes involved changing files with '99' to '1999' where appropriate. The old pages will redirect you, but the new format is 199912.html...

I also fixed the date at the bottom of this page, which was displaying wrong, but had nothing to do with y2k...

I saw part of Larry King's interview with Gates the other day, and watching it, I couldn't help but feeling like most people really see Gates as a visionary, or some sort of technical guy, when I really see him as just a marketing/sales/business guy, who's running as fast as he can, trying to keep ahead of the pack (which is gaining!) At least with Jobs, we all *know* he's a showman and a marketing guy...

Let's make this the year we take the 'Windows' out of 'Windows 2000'
